Mehidy Calls for Improvement After Bangladesh's Disappointing Test Loss to South Africa
Bangladesh's top-order batting faced significant scrutiny following their seven-wicket defeat to South Africa in the Dhaka Test. The first four batsmen combined for just 105 runs, marking their poorest performance of the year. This early collapse set the tone for the match, with only the lower-order batsmen, spearheaded by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, preventing an innings defeat.
After scoring a crucial 97 in the second innings, Mehidy reflected on the match conditions, stating that the pitch and toss were in their favor. However, the top-order's failure on the first day ultimately derailed their chances. "We won the toss and opted to bat first, which seemed promising," Mehidy said. "But we couldn't capitalize. If we had put runs on the board in our first innings, the outcome could have been different. Instead, we were bowled out for just 106 before lunch on the first day, which was detrimental."
Mehidy emphasized the need for better decision-making from Bangladesh's batsmen. Among the top four, only Mahmudul Hasan Joy showed any form, scoring 30 and 40 runs in his two innings. The other three—Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto—failed to make an impact, although they each have had decent performances in recent matches. Mehidy’s assessment underlines the urgency for improvement as Bangladesh looks to bounce back in future fixtures.
