Markram Aims to End South Africa's Asian Test Drought with Mirpur Victory
South Africa has endured a decade-long wait for a Test victory in the subcontinent, with their current squad lacking any prior experience in this challenging environment. Of the playing XI in Mirpur, only five have previously participated in a Test match in Asia. While eight members of the 15-man squad have toured the continent, none were part of the team that last celebrated success in Galle back in 2014.
The long stretch without a win has been marked by significant losses, but Aiden Markram, the stand-in captain, believes their recent victory could signal a new beginning. "It's special. We're a young, slightly inexperienced group, and winning in the subcontinent is a huge boost for us," Markram expressed during the post-match press conference. "This win is crucial; it gives us a taste of what playing cricket here is all about and excites us for the upcoming challenges."
This triumph may also evoke memories of a more dominant era for South Africa in the subcontinent. Between 2007 and 2014, they played 15 Tests across Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and the UAE, losing only three and securing series victories against all except India, with whom they drew twice. In contrast, during that same period, Australia managed just one win out of 15 Tests in the subcontinent, while England won only three out of 16. Apart from India and Sri Lanka, South Africa was the most successful team in Asia during that time.
