Pakistan made their Test debut in July 1952. They took on India at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground (now Arun Jaitley Stadium) in Delhi in October 1952. India won the match by an innings and 70 runs. During their first tour of England in 1954, they drew the series 1–1 with a victory at The Oval in which fast bowler Fazal Mahmood claimed 12 wickets.

Pakistan kept improving as a team through the 70s and 80s and are known for producing some of the most fearsome fast bowlers in world cricket. They won their first major title when they came back from near-elimination to lift the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand under Imran Khan’s inspirational leadership.

They co-hosted the 1987 World Cup with India and were runners-up in the 1999 edition held in England. Pakistan won the 2009 T20 World Cup and were runners-up in the 2007 edition as well as in 2022. They also stunned India by lifting the 2017 Champions Trophy, apart from becoming the fourth team to lift the mace of the ICC Test Championship in 2016.

The India-Pakistan rivalry is considered one of the greatest in cricket history. In 1986, Javed Miandad famously hit a last-ball six off Chetan Sharma to help Pakistan win the Austral-Asia Cup. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli scored a spectacular 82* off 53 to see India beat Pakistan at the MCG.

Javed Miandad, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Qadir, Saeed Anwar, Shoaib Akhtar, and Babar Azam are some of the renowned names to have represented Pakistan in international cricket.
