Labuschagne: Smith's Move to No. 4 is Logical, Opening Spot Wide Open
Marnus Labuschagne believes the competition for the vacant Test opening position is wide open, but he argues that Steven Smith's shift back to No. 4 for the upcoming series against India is a straightforward decision. Smith recently discussed his return to the middle order, highlighting that both Test opener Usman Khawaja and Labuschagne himself preferred him batting behind them.
"They didn't want me at the top... that was a significant factor," Smith remarked. He elaborated that Khawaja and Labuschagne felt more secure with him in the middle order. "I can see their perspective; it just makes sense," he added.
Labuschagne agreed with Smith's assessment, stating that having one of Australia’s best players returning to a familiar position is a logical move. With Cameron Green unavailable for the summer and no one currently solidifying the No. 4 spot, Labuschagne emphasized, "Why not have the player who has succeeded the most for Australia in that role?"
He further explained that Smith’s natural aptitude for the No. 4 position stems from his ability to read match situations and adapt his strategy accordingly. "At No. 4, you need to excel against spin and know when to be aggressive or defensive," Labuschagne noted, highlighting the critical skills required for that batting order.
In summary, Labuschagne sees Smith's return to No. 4 as a practical and beneficial decision, setting the stage for a dynamic Test series against India.
