What Mumbai Indians Need to Do to Reach the WPL 2026 Playoffs?

The Mumbai Indians have created their own difficult situation this season, having started off with solid performances early on this season. Currently they are the reigning champions of the tournament but are on a 4 out of 5 matches losing streak. They should have progressed into playoffs quite easily, however, they have become out of sync with what qualifies them for playoffs. They no longer control their destiny with respect to making playoffs.

In their last match against the Gujarat Giants, they had a captain’s innings from the bat of Harmanpreet Kaur, scoring 82 runs without being dismissed, although it did not save them.

Mumbai have shown some glimpses of controlling the match, but have shown the same inconsistencies as they have all season. They continue to have no true top-order batsmen, the middle-order batsmen are not capable of dealing with pressure, the Mumbai Indians are also not looking to develop their entire team and instead are relying upon only a few players to produce.

These ills have been in evidence for the last several seasons and have shown again this season during their performance in the WPL 2026. In particular, Harmanpreet’s individual performance of scoring 82 runs has simply proven she cannot take MI to playoffs alone. The decline of momentum during the mid-innings periods, the practice of giving away games, and now MI’s inability to close out close games has put MI in a position of being out of control of their own fate.

Harmanpreet's team has struggled with both catching and fielding this season. The idea of the Mumbai Indians not making it past the group stage is a possibility for the first time. The Indians currently do not have any matches left to play. Their qualification now hinges solely on the final league match between the Delhi Capitals and the UP Warriorz, as well. In order for the Warriorz to knock the Indians out by net run rate, they would need nothing short of a miracle. To give you an idea, such a large differential is virtually unheard of in women's franchise cricket. Provided that the Warriorz defeat the Capitals without rewriting record books, the superior net run rate for the Indians should allow them to qualify for the next stage of the competition.
