Shubman Gill Recovering, Shreyas Iyer Begins Rehab Ahead of India vs South Africa ODI

india’s assistant and fast-bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has shared updates on the fitness of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, just two days before the first ODI against South Africa. Speaking to the media, Morkel said that Gill is recovering well, while Shreyas has started his rehabilitation.
Gill, who is India’s captain in Tests and ODIs, had a minor neck issue that got worse during the Kolkata Test. He traveled with the team to Guwahati but didn’t play. After that, he went to Mumbai for scans. Gill is expected to head to the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru by the end of the week and will then join the team for the upcoming T20I series.

“I think it’s best for the medical team to give the update on that. I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him, and he’s recovering well, so that’s pleasing to hear,” Morkel told reporters in Ranchi.
Shreyas, India’s ODI vice-captain, had suffered an abdominal injury on the field in Sydney. While taking a running back catch, he hit the ground hard and winced in pain.
Later, it was revealed that Shreyas had suffered lacerations on his spleen, which resulted in internal bleeding. Shreyas is expected to recover physically in 2 months, after which he travels to CoE.
“Shreyas has also started his rehab, which is great. So yeah, we’re looking forward to welcoming them back into the squad. The good thing is they’re healthy and starting their preparation on their way back into the team,” the Indian coach added.
