Shubman Gill Nominated for ICC Player of the Month for July 2025 After Leading India to Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Draw
India captain Shubman Gill has been nominated for the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for July after his impressive performances in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. At 25, this was his first time leading India in a Test series and he helped a young team secure a 2-2 draw in England. Gill batted at No. 4 throughout the series and played several standout innings, proving his growing importance in world cricket while breaking a few long-standing records.
In July, Shubman Gill scored 567 runs in just three Tests, with an amazing average of 94.50. His best performance was at Edgbaston, where he made 269 runs in the first innings and 161 in the second. His total of 430 runs in that match is the second-highest in Test history, just behind Graham Gooch’s 456. Gill kept his form going in the next Test at Old Trafford, where he made a key 103 in the second innings helping India avoid a loss. That knock was vital for India, who later won by just six runs at The Oval to level the series.
In the five Tests, Shubman Gill scored 754 runs at an average of 75.40, breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 732 runs from the 1971 West Indies tour. Only Sir Donald Bradman has scored more runs as a captain in a five-Test series. The ICC praised Gill for stepping into Virat Kohli’s shoes at No. 4, saying his consistency and leadership brought stability and flair to the team, especially in his first series as captain.
"His consistency at No.4, carrying on the baton from all-time great Virat Kohli, provided stability and flair in equal measure, and combined with his extraordinary captaincy in his debut series," the ICC stated.
Gill's ability to score big when India needed it most, especially with wickets falling around him, played a key role in their comebacks during the series. His calmness and shot selection were widely praised, marking a significant step in his Test career. Meanwhile, South Africa's Wiaan Mulder also made a strong case for the nomination with a record-breaking 367* in the second Test against Zimbabwe setting the highest individual score in South African Test history. He finished the series with 531 runs at an average of 265.50 and also took seven wickets including a four-wicket haul in the first Test.
England captain Ben Stokes completes the list of nominees after an impressive all-round performance in the Tests against India. He scored 251 runs at an average of 50.20 and took 12 wickets at 26.33 in July. His leadership played a vital role in the series and he was named Player of the Match in back-to-back Tests. At Lord's, he delivered a match-winning all-round performance and at Old Trafford his 141 and five-wicket haul were crucial in turning the game in England's favour during a tough situation.
The ICC highlighted Stokes' ability to influence matches with both bat and ball, noting that his leadership kept England’s intensity high in the tight series. His bowling, especially long spells, often helped break key partnerships and shifted momentum in England’s favour. The winner of the ICC Player of the Month award for July will be chosen through fan votes and input from the ICC voting academy, which includes former players, journalists and broadcasters.
