Pakistan post their highest total in vain as South Africa win the second ODI

by mishaalmubarak

Pakistan Women did not let a ginormous 362-run target intimidate them as they produced a combined effort in response to South Africa’s exploits at Centurion. However, even though they posted their highest ODI total ever, the hosts edged past them by 16 runs, handing them a heartbreaking loss in the second ODI.

South Africa’s second-highest total

Sent in to bat first, South Africa batters Tazmin Brits, Sune Luus, and Annerie Dercksen were the wreckers-in-chief as they scored 57, 77, and 90 respectively to build the foundation for their second-highest total. Joining the effort, Chloe Tryon and Nadine de Klerk capped the innings off with quick cameos, exploiting all that the Centurion surface had to offer.

At the close of the first innings, Pakistan would have been the worried side as they had a daunting total to chase. The feeling was further intensified when Muneeba Ali and Sidra Amin cut sorry figures and went back to the hut within the first six overs.

Massive efforts in vain

However, half-centuries from Sadaf Shamas, Ayesha Zafar, and captain Fatima Sana brought Pakistan back into contention. Syeda Aroob Shah, who earlier bowled 10 economical overs and took two wickets, and Diana Baig also chipped in with handy runs down the order. But unfortunately, despite the gargantuan effort, Pakistan fell short of the target.

This was Pakistan’s second defeat in two matches, with South Africa winning the three-match ODI series 2-0 with one game to spare.
