Pacer Ali Raza part of ICC U19 World Cup Team of the Tournament

by mishaalmubarak

Pacer Ali Raza is the only player from Pakistan’s U19 team to make it to the ICC U19 World Cup Team of the Tournament.

Raza grabbed 13 wickets

Raza, who took 13 wickets in five games, finished joint third on the tournament’s wicket-takers list and was among the few bright spots for Pakistan in what was an otherwise dismal campaign.

Pakistan U19 had an unfortunate end to their ICC U19 World Cup journey. Their opening defeat to England had far-reaching consequences than they could have expected. Under the tournament rules, net run rate and points from group-stage games were carried forward to the next stage, but only for matches in which both teams progressed.

Pakistan’s disappointing end

Since England reached the Super Sixes, Pakistan were forced to carry the horrors of that defeat forward.

As a result, qualification came down to Pakistan’s final game, against India. They not only had to beat their arch-rivals but also hope for other things going their way. Pakistan were required to chase a 252-run target in 33.3 overs on a difficult Bulawayo surface. However, not only did they fail to do so, but they also dispiritedly went on to lose the match altogether.

ICC U19 Team of the Tournament:

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Viran Chamuditha, Faisal Khan Shinowzada, Thomas Rew (c/wk), Oliver Peake, Ben Mayes, Kanishk Chouhan, Nooristani Omarzai, Vitel Lawes, Ali Raza, Manny Lumsden, Henil Patel (12th player).
