IPL 2027: Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain Pat Cummins May Opt OutSunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins has indicated that he could skip the entire IPL 2027 season to prioritize Australia’s busy international schedule. The Australian skipper, who returned from injury during IPL 2026 after spending several months on the sidelines, admitted that he may need to make sacrifices next year to manage his workload effectively. With the ODI World Cup and a packed Test calendar on the horizon, Cummins is weighing his options carefully.

The year 2027 is expected to be one of the most demanding periods of Cummins’ career. As Australia’s captain, he will lead the team in the ODI World Cup, where the reigning champions will aim to defend their title. Alongside the World Cup, Australia also have a number of high-profile Test assignments, making workload management a key concern for the all-rounder.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cummins suggested that something would have to give in 2027 and made it clear that Test cricket and the ODI World Cup remain his top priorities. While he stopped short of confirming his absence from the IPL, his comments strongly hinted that skipping the tournament is a realistic possibility.

“Something has got to give at some stage next year and it’s not going to be Test matches or an ODI World Cup. I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don’t really want to lock in anything,” Cummins said.

Cummins Returned After Injury-Hit IPL 2026 Start

The Australian star endured an injury-hit start to 2026 after suffering a lumbar stress injury. The setback kept him out of action for several months, causing him to miss the first half of IPL 2026. He only received fitness clearance from Cricket Australia in mid-April and went on to feature in eight matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad, claiming eight wickets during the campaign.

In Cummins’ absence, Sunrisers Hyderabad handed the captaincy duties to Ishan Kishan, who impressed with his leadership. Should Cummins decide to skip IPL 2027, Kishan is widely expected to be the frontrunner to lead the franchise once again. His successful stint as stand-in captain has already demonstrated his ability to handle the responsibility.

Australia’s international calendar for 2027 begins with a four-Test series against India in January and February. The series is expected to be one of the marquee contests of the year and will demand significant physical and mental effort from the Australian captain and his teammates.

Following the India series, Australia are scheduled to play a special 150th anniversary Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March. The historic fixture will be one of the highlights of the cricketing calendar and carries significant prestige for both nations.

The challenges do not end there for Cummins and Australia. A full Ashes series is also scheduled later in the year, providing another major Test assignment before the focus shifts to white-ball cricket. Managing fitness and workload throughout such an intense period will be crucial for the fast-bowling all-rounder.

Cummins reiterated that his priorities remain firmly fixed on Test cricket and the ODI World Cup. He also acknowledged that he may require a break before the Ashes if he plays the entire India series. “The priorities for me are always the Test matches and that ODI World Cup. I dare say if I play all of India, I need some sort of break before a pretty gruelling Ashes series,” he said, underlining why IPL 2027 could ultimately be sacrificed for Australia’s international ambitions.
