IPL 2025: Matthew Hayden Recalls Terrifying Mid-Match Halt Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
The IPL 2025 season will forever resonate with cricket fans for its unforgettable moments, yet one incident stands out for an entirely different reason. The tournament faced an abrupt mid-season suspension, a direct consequence of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. This dramatic pause unfolded during a match between the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala, halted in the 11th over due to critical security concerns.

Australian cricket icon Matthew Hayden recently recounted a chilling episode from IPL 2025 on a podcast, shedding light on the immense pressure felt by commentators amidst the unfolding chaos.
“Initially, I had flown from Mumbai to Delhi overnight because there were no connecting flights to Dharamsala, Punjab’s home ground. It’s a magnificent venue. But when I landed in Delhi, the airport was closed. This coincided with Pakistan’s incursion into India, with drones navigating the skies and ground-to-air missiles being fired. It was eerie. We had to drive via Chandigarh to Dharamsala, an 11.5-hour journey. By the time we reached the venue, we were told the game would proceed,” Hayden recalled.
The match's sudden interruption was initially attributed to a technical glitch, but the true reason was far more alarming: a critical security measure to safeguard the stadium from a potential drone attack. Hayden revealed that commentators received a discreet pre-briefing, aware that a dramatic mid-game halt was imminent.
“Half an hour before we went on air, we received a security message that if the lights went out, it wasn’t a technical issue. It meant the venue had been compromised, and an emergency evacuation would be initiated,” he stated.
“I was in the middle of a sentence, talking on air, when the first light tower went out. I informed the spectators and fans. Then the second tower went out almost immediately. Security personnel came in, and we had to drop our mics mid-sentence and were ushered out of the ground,” he added.
Following this unforeseen pause, the tournament remained suspended for over a week before eventually resuming with a revised schedule. This tense and utterly terrifying moment has since secured its place as one of the most indelible chapters in IPL history.
