Harshit Rana's Debut Raises Doubts on Bumrah for CT 2025
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra thinks that Harshit Rana's surprise ODI debut against England might mean that Jasprit Bumrah won't be available for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
Chopra was surprised by Rana's debut in the team since other pacers were available as options. He noted that Rana’s selection appears to have pushed Arshdeep Singh’s ODI comeback further down the pecking order.
"Harshit Rana's debut tells me there are minimal chances of Jasprit Bumrah being available for the Champions Trophy," Chopra remarked. "If Bumrah is not there and you have to take Harshit as he is ahead of [Mohammed] Siraj at the moment, playing him without a debut would make your heart beat fast."
Rana’s Debut Against England
Harshit Rana and Yashasvi Jaiswal made their ODI debut in the first match against England in Nagpur on Thursday. Harshit Rana bowled well and he took three wickets in seven overs.
Aakash Chopra about Arshdeep Singh not being in the ODI squad
“When will Arshdeep get his chance to make a comeback in ODI cricket? That question remains unanswered because he hasn’t played for quite some time,” Chopra said. “Harshit’s debut, however, gives me a clear indication that the team management might not be considering Bumrah’s return anytime soon.”
Debate Over India’s Batting Order
The former cricketer questioned India's batting order, suggesting that Jaiswal opening the innings pushed Shubman Gill down the order. "Yashasvi Jaiswal's debut tells you that they are not looking towards or thinking about Rishabh Pant at all," Chopra said. "I didn't like Shubman at No. 3 because there is no place in the top three."
Pant vs KL Rahul: The Wicketkeeper
Chopra further argued that Pant could have been a better choice in the middle order, which would have set up a direct competition between him and KL Rahul for the wicketkeeper-batter’s role.
"You could have possibly put Rishabh Pant in the middle. You could have done a two-horse race between Pant and Rahul. The playing XI brought more questions than it answered," Chopra observed.
