England’s ODI Collapse Puts Their Automatic 2027 World Cup Spot in Serious Danger
England’s struggles in the 50-over format under Harry Brook continued as South Africa claimed their first ODI series win in England since 1998. After the second match of the three-game series at Lord’s, South Africa took an unbeatable 2-0 lead. The match ended in a thrilling contest, with South Africa edging England by just five runs.
The South African players stayed calm and focused, showing little celebration, while England were left to ponder yet another disappointing result. As England's abysmal run in the ODIs persisted, their chances to automatically qualify for the 2027 World Cup are now in jeopardy. The 2019 world champions boast just seven wins out of 21 ODIs since the 2023 World Cup in India. Their shambolic show includes a horror group-stage exit in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, along with a series defeat in India.
England’s ODI Struggles Put World Cup Spot at Risk
Even though England completely beat the West Indies in a three-match series, Harry Brook’s first time leading the team in ODIs, they are still ranked eighth in the ICC ODI rankings. If their poor performance in this format continues, they could miss out on automatic qualification.
Right now, they are four points behind Afghanistan and 37 points behind the top-ranked team, India. The 2027 edition of the World Cup will feature 14 teams. The tournament will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, with the first two gaining automatic qualification. Namibia, which doesn't have the status of a full member nation, will traverse through the qualifying rounds.
England’s Upcoming Matches and Qualification Battle
The top eight teams, besides the two host nations, will automatically qualify. England still has 18 months to turn things around and keep a safe distance from the cut-off. Before the Ashes, they will play an away series against New Zealand, who are currently ranked number two.
After that, the Three Lions will travel to Sri Lanka for three more matches ahead of the T20 World Cup. Next year, some formidable opponents patiently wait to test their strength against England. They will lock horns with India in three matches, participate in a tri-series in Pakistan and meet their arch-rival Australia in the winter.
To England's angst, teams below them face opponents who don't appear tough on paper. If two teams managed to topple England, Brook's side will have to go through the standard qualification procedure to gain entry in the marquee event.
