The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will begin on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, led by captain Dasun Shanaka, has a strong team with a mix of experienced players and young talents who are eager to prove themselves.
Sri Lanka has been placed in Group B alongside Australia, Ireland, Oman and Zimbabwe; therefore, they will have both difficult opponents and good opportunities to progress to the next round.
Strengths
Sri Lanka, co-hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with India, has a very talented group of players; however, their greatest asset is spin bowling led by Wanindu Hasaranga and backed up by Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, etc, all of whom will benefit from playing on pitches that favour spinners in both countries.
In addition to an outstanding spin attack, they also possess a good fast-bowling line-up with Matheesha Pathirana, Dushmantha Chameera, and Pramod Madushan providing pace and bounce. In terms of batting, players such as Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, and Dasun Shanaka have the ability to get runs quickly under pressure; combined with the team being able to play in their own backyard, this all provides Sri Lanka with a distinct advantage.
Weaknesses
Sri Lanka’s most serious weakness heading into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is their inconsistent batting. In recent T20Is, Sri Lanka has struggled to chase down large targets and have found themselves repeatedly losing middle-order wickets too early in their innings. Another area needing improvement for Sri Lanka is bowling during the powerplay stage of games.
While they have some quality bowlers on their team, Sri Lanka has been unable to consistently take enough wickets early in the innings as well. Sri Lanka will have to substantially improve both their inconsistent batting and poor powerplay bowling if they want to be competitive in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
