AUS vs SA 2nd ODI 2025 Highlights: Ngidi’s Five-for Powers South Africa to Series Win Over Australia in Mackay

A dominant all-round show from South Africa, not just today but right through the ODI series. They’ve thrashed the Aussies by 84 runs in Mackay and sealed the series 2-0 with one game still to play on Sunday. South Africa make it five consecutive ODI series wins over Australia, continuing their dominance in this format against the Aussies.
Earlier in the day, Aiden Markram won the toss and chose to bat first in Mackay. However, South Africa were rocked early as Xavier Bartlett struck twice inside the first six overs. The Protea skipper fell cheaply for a 4-ball duck, followed by Ryan Rickelton who managed only 8, leaving the visitors on the back foot right at the start. South Africa badly needed a stand, and Tony de Zorzi, Matthew Breetzke, and later Tristan Stubbs provided just that.
De Zorzi and Breetzke put together a crucial 67-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to stabilize the innings. However, just when things looked settled, Adam Zampa struck in his very first over, removing De Zorzi for 38 against the run of play. Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs carried the momentum forward with a commanding 89-run stand for the 4th wicket, setting the perfect platform for South Africa to push for a big total. Australia, however, struggled to break partnerships in the first half of the innings.
At 179/3, the Proteas looked well in control, but the game turned as wickets began to tumble in clusters. Breetzke fell for 88, throwing away a chance at a century, while Stubbs followed after a well-made 74. The Aussies clawed their way back brilliantly, bowling South Africa out for 277 in 49.1 overs. Adam Zampa was the standout bowler for Australia with figures of 3/63.
Australia Collapse as Ngidi’s Five-Wicket Haul Seals South Africa’s 84-Run Win
Chasing 278, Australia were rocked early by the Proteas’ new-ball burst. Travis Head was the first to go, nicking off to Nandre Burger for just 6. From the other end, Lungi Ngidi struck as well, removing Marnus Labuschagne for 1.
Ngidi could have had an even bigger impact inside the powerplay, but Tristan Stubbs spilled two chances, one each of Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green. Marsh, however, couldn’t capitalize on the lifeline and departed for 18, leaving Australia in deep trouble inside the first 10 overs.
Cameron Green and Josh Inglis tried to revive the chase with a steady 67-run stand, but just as Australia looked to gain momentum, Senuran Muthusamy broke through, removing Green for 35. Soon after, Alex Carey fell cheaply for 13, piling more pressure on the visitors. Inglis fought hard with a counterattacking 87 off 74 balls, but with wickets tumbling around him, Australia never found stability.
From a promising 133/4, they suffered a dramatic collapse and were bowled out for 193. Lungi Ngidi was the star with the ball, bagging a superb 5/42. South Africa sealed an emphatic 84-run win to go 2-0 up in the series.
