Transport

IPL has been active in the transport sector since the early 1980s. The challenges faced by the transport industry are amongst the most pressing in the developed world. For all forms of transport, as the limits of capacity are approached, the resulting problems require the very best technological solutions.

Road

We have been actively involved in a wide range of road transport projects including Highways Information, Ticket Issuing and Analysis, Mobile Communications and Geographical Information Systems. Most notably, IPL has supported the Highways Agency since 1990 in the planning and deployment of a broad range of telematics systems, for example the M25 Controlled Motorways Trial and the M42 Active Traffic Management (ATM) Trial.

Rail

We have supported many of the world's leading rail systems suppliers and train operators in the development of a wide range of applications including:

  • Automatic Train Operation
  • On-board Monitoring and Control
  • Signalling and Control
  • Automatic Train Protection
  • Passenger Information
  • Ticketing Systems
  • Interlocking and Movements Simulation
  • Prediction and Regulation
  • Timetable Processor

Systems developed by IPL have been deployed across the UK rail network, on London Underground and the Channel Tunnel Shuttle trains.

Sea

Our maritime sector experience includes consultancy support to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. We have also provided enhancements to the operational support systems of the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, and developed a database of WWI and WWII shipwrecks for the Shipping Policy Unit of the former DETR.

Air

We have developed Air Traffic Control (ATC) operational systems and simulators, and have provided consultancy support to the Civil Aviation Authority in the assessment of future ATC architectures. We have also developed software for the system used by the UK's Distress and Divert cell, at the London Air Traffic Control Centre, to aid the location and monitoring of aircraft transmitting on the International VHF distress frequency.
