Shreyas Iyer's Test Comeback Hindered by Shoulder Injury
Shreyas Iyer's hopes of returning to the Indian Test squad have taken a significant setback as he has been ruled out of Mumbai's upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Tripura due to a shoulder injury. The right-handed batsman had recently made headlines with a stellar performance, scoring a century in Mumbai's nine-wicket victory over Maharashtra in the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy season.
According to a report from Cricbuzz, Iyer's injury will prevent him from participating in the match scheduled to begin on October 26 at Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium in Agartala. Sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have indicated that he will require at least a week of rest.
After previously recovering from back issues, Iyer had been actively participating in cricket and appeared fit to compete in the longer format. Following his impressive innings of 142 runs in the Ranji Trophy, he expressed his commitment to listening to his body when making decisions about his fitness, stating, "I will be taking a decision based on that, and I hope that my team will also back me."
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has confirmed that Iyer will remain in Mumbai and will not travel to Agartala. As of now, no replacement has been announced for the injured batsman.
Earlier this year, Iyer was dropped from the five-Test series against England midway through the tournament. His performance in the longest format has been under scrutiny, and he lost his central contract after declining to participate in Ranji Trophy matches despite clear directives from the BCCI. Nevertheless, it was later revealed that he had been managing a back injury, which hindered his performance.
