Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir for Choosing Washington Sundar Over Kuldeep Yadav
Sunil Gavaskar has expressed strong disapproval of captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir's decision to include Washington Sundar in the Indian lineup for the second Test against New Zealand at MCA Stadium in Pune, instead of opting for Kuldeep Yadav. Sundar was a late addition to the squad prior to the match, having not been included in the original team.
Following an 8-wicket defeat in the first Test in Bengaluru, the Indian management sought to strengthen their bowling attack. Gambhir explained the rationale behind Sundar's selection, noting the presence of several left-handed batsmen in the New Zealand lineup. “We wanted an additional bowler capable of moving the ball away from the left-handers, so we brought in Washington Sundar. We have yet to finalize our Playing XI, but Washington offers us more control with the ball,” Gambhir stated.
However, Gavaskar strongly disagreed with this assessment, arguing that the decision reflects a deeper concern about the team's lower order. “Choosing Washington Sundar is a troubling decision by the captain and coach. It seems they are relying on him for runs rather than bowling effectiveness. I would have opted for Kuldeep Yadav, who can also effectively bowl against left-handers and contributes with the bat. While Sundar may be a stronger batsman, Kuldeep's bowling skills should not be overlooked,” Gavaskar asserted.
Sundar's recent form includes a century in his last Ranji Trophy match for Tamil Nadu against Delhi, but Gavaskar believes that a more balanced bowling attack is crucial for the team's success.
