ZIM vs SA 1st Test Day 1 Highlights: Pretorius, Bosch Slam Tons as South Africa Finish Day 1 Strong at 418/9 vs Zimbabwe
South Africa finished Day 1 of the first Test against Zimbabwe on a high at 418/9, thanks to brilliant centuries from 19-year-old debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Corbin Bosch. Things didn’t start well for the visitors in Bulawayo as they lost early wickets in a tough morning session. But the day quickly turned around with Pretorius showing great composure on debut and Bosch stepping up with a crucial knock down the order. Together, they helped South Africa bounce back and take charge after what had looked like a shaky start.
South Africa, fielding a lineup quite different from their World Test Championship-winning side, faced early trouble on Day 1 as Tanaka Chivanga tore through their top order with a fiery new-ball spell. Tony de Zorzi, Matthew Breetzke, and David Bedingham fell quickly, and things got worse when Wiaan Mulder was run out after a mix-up. At 55/4, the Proteas were in serious trouble, staring at a collapse in Bulawayo.
A Record-Breaking Century on Debut
At just 19 and playing his first-ever Test, Lhuan-dre Pretorius walked in under pressure with South Africa struggling, but showed incredible maturity for his age. Rather than letting the moment get to him, the young left-hander played with calm confidence, launching a counterattack that changed the tone of the innings. He got going with an early six and followed it up with a series of well-timed boundaries, especially through the off-side. His knock was a mix of elegant shot-making and gritty determination a standout debut under tough circumstances.
After lunch, Pretorius got a big boost from fellow youngster Dewald Brevis smashed a quick 51 off just 41 balls giving the innings the spark it needed. Their brief stand helped Pretorius settle in and play with more confidence. Even with Zimbabwe constantly appealing and some hair‑trigger moments, the 19‑year‑old stayed calm and kept attacking. He notched up his first Test hundred in only 112 balls, becoming the youngest South African to do so on debut. He went on to score 153 off 160 deliveries mixing crisp boundaries with cool composure and fearless shot‑making finishing with 20 fours and four towering sixes.

Bosch Brings Up Maiden Test Ton
His wicket after tea gave Zimbabwe a brief spark of hope, but Corbin Bosch, fairly new to Tests himself, made sure South Africa stayed on top. Batting at No. 8, he started cautiously, picking up singles and building steady partnerships with Keshav Maharaj and Codi Yusuf.
As the bowlers tired, Bosch picked his moments perfectly, gradually widening his shot range. In the final session, he upped the tempo and brought up his first Test hundred off 124 balls with a crisp boundary off the last delivery of the day. Unbeaten on 100, he walked off alongside Maphaka who’d finished with a six sealing a remarkable turnaround for the visitors.
Despite Tanaka Chivanga’s four-wicket haul being the highlight for Zimbabwe, they’ll rue missed chances and loose fielding that let South Africa wrest back control. What started as a shaky collapse ended with the Proteas showing real composure and promise.
