Younis Khan 'ready to serve' Pakistan in any role offered

by mishaalmubarak

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan said he would be available to serve Pakistan in any capacity, if called upon by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). His remarks come in the wake of reports that the board is considering him and Mohammad Hafeez for a major role for the men's national team.

"If I am given an opportunity, I am ready to serve Pakistan in any capacity," Younis said.

"If I am assigned responsibility for the national team, I will try to perform it well. Retired players and support staff are needed for a team. Whoever gets the chance should serve Pakistan as a Pakistani."

Sarfaraz retained

Some sources earlier suggested that Younis is in line to replace Sarfaraz Ahmed as the side's red-ball head coach. Sarfaraz, who was appointed as Pakistan's Test head coach in April this year, oversaw Pakistan's 2-0 whitewash against Bangladesh last month.

The clean sweep was the second consecutive time Pakistan failed to win a Test game against the opposition in a bilateral series, having done so in 2024 as well.

But he is understood to have been given the green signal to continue as the head coach for the upcoming away series against West Indies and England. Pakistan's next Test assignment will be a two-match Test series in Trinidad and Tobago after which they will travel to England.

Pakistan’s survival chances slim

Pakistan are currently in ninth place in the World Test Championship table, having won only one of their four games so far. They were also docked eight points for a slow over-rate during the first Test against Bangladesh, which reduced their tally to just four points.

Their upcoming Test tours are crucial to their survival in the WTC. However, the chances of doing well on these away tours are slim, largely because Pakistan have not won a single away Test since 2023, when they whitewashed Sri Lanka 2-0.
