World Test Championship Set for 12 Teams as Afghanistan, Ireland, Zimbabwe Eye Entry

The International Cricket Council is planning to increase the number of teams in the World Test Championship (WTC) to 12. Because of this, teams like Afghanistan, Ireland, and Zimbabwe may also take part in the next WTC cycle starting in July 2027.  As of now, nine teams play in the WTC.

The Cricket Financial Journal has stated that the 12 team format's implementation may be made. One reason for this is that not all the smaller cricket boards are in favour of a two-division, two-tier system. Further, the member boards, are also talking about the Future Tours Programme (FTP) and the importance of having a minimum of Tests per side. Lastly, the ICC is also establishing a system that would allow the qualification for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

WTC Expansion to 12 Teams and Olympic Qualification Plans Under Discussion

The best-ranked teams from Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Africa will qualify for the tournament. The United States, as the host, will automatically get a spot in the event. The last remaining spot will be based on a global qualifier, comprising the top 8 teams, outside of those that have secured a berth.

This framework would be applicable to both the men’s and women’s teams. The ICC could ratify the above-mentioned pointers before their annual AGM in July 2026 in Scotland.

The International Cricket Council had planned its 2026 quarterly meeting in Doha from March 25–27. However, it was cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Instead, an online meeting was held, but no major decisions were made.
