West Indies Spinner Celebrates Achieving Top Spot in ICC Men's T20I Bowling Rankings

by UMMADI JAYA

This week, the ICC Men's Player Rankings got changed, and Akeal Hosein has now climbed to the number one position for T20I bowlers. Hosein arrived there because of how well he played in the recent series against Bangladesh at home. It's his first time ever reaching the top spot, and he even surpassed England's Adil Rashid to get there.

Hosein, a 31-year-old individual who plays as a left-arm orthodox spinner, just moved up three ranks and decided to go to social media to express how joyful he feels regarding it. He even released a video with his post. This is something I don't typically do--but I must admit, this moment seems too special not to share. It's really unexpected to me being the person from Laventille, the young person who grew up in the hood, and now I'm the best in the world, Hosein said.

Hosein first played for the West Indies in 2021 and has quickly grasped 48 wickets across 55 T20I games. In a recent series versus Bangladesh, he had a standout performance with an economic bowl of 2/13 in the first game and totaled three wickets over two matches. He said, "Regardless of what’s been said or how long I stay at this spot, no matter what comes next, let it be known that I did it... I am number 1."
