Virat Kohli's Mentor Rejects Gavaskar's Advice, Defends His Form in Australia

by JGD123

In a recent exchange that has captivated cricket enthusiasts, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar suggested that Virat Kohli should adopt a more selective approach when facing deliveries outside the off stump during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Gavaskar advised Kohli to emulate Sachin Tendulkar's strategy from the historic Sydney Test, where Tendulkar famously refrained from playing cover drives to overcome a similar struggle and scored a magnificent double century.

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar remarked, "Sachin Tendulkar was repeatedly dismissed by balls wide of the off stump. By avoiding the cover drive altogether in Sydney, he achieved a double hundred. Kohli should consider this approach and review footage of his previous successes on Australian soil."

However, this advice was met with disapproval by Rajkumar Sharma, Kohli's childhood coach. Sharma pointed out that Kohli's form is not in question, citing his century in the second innings of the first Test as evidence of his continued prowess. "Sunil Gavaskar is a respected figure in cricket, and his insights are valuable. Nonetheless, it’s important to recognize Virat’s contributions since 2008. He has already scored a hundred in this series, and we must consider how many others have reached such a milestone," Sharma stated in an interview with PTI.

Sharma further expressed confidence in Kohli's abilities, having had personal discussions with him about his performance. "We are discussing a player who has consistently delivered for over a decade. It’s premature to say he is out of form, and I am confident in his ability to bounce back," Sharma added.

The discourse surrounding Kohli’s batting technique underscores the pressures faced by elite cricketers and the intense scrutiny from legends of the game. With the series against Australia in full swing, fans and analysts alike are keenly observing whether Kohli will heed Gavaskar’s advice or continue to trust in his established methods.

As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy progresses, the narrative around Kohli's performance remains a central talking point, reflecting both the high stakes of international cricket and the passion it ignites among its aficionados.
