Virat Kohli's Clash with Sam Konstas Could Lead to Suspension for the Fifth Test?

by William Campbell

The cricketing world is abuzz after Virat Kohli had an altercation with 19-year-old Australian opener Sam Konstas on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia. The incident occurred at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Thursday, December 26, during a match that was much hyped as Australia chose to bat first.

During a brief break between the 10th and 11th overs, Konstas and Usman Khawaja were swapping ends when Kohli was crossing to the striker's end and collided with the young batter. Replays suggested that Kohli seemed in control of his movement. Konstas, focusing on adjusting his gloves was distracted and unintentionally ran into him.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting said on live television that it could have been intentional contact. The controversy has created a heated debate on the intentions of Kohli.

"Have a look where Virat walks. Virat has walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation. No doubt in my mind whatsoever," Ricky Ponting said on 7Cricket.

MCC's Stance on Deliberate Physical Contact: Level 2 Offense

According to the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which governs the game's laws, "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact" is a Level 2 offense under Law 42.1 on Unacceptable Conduct. A reported offense by on-field umpires will be judged by the match referee for possible penalties.

For Level 2 offenses, the available penalties include:

Three Demerit Points: A fine ranging from 50% to 100% of the match fee or one-match suspension.

Four Demerit Points: Two suspension points, like one Test or two limited overs match suspension.

Demerit points are carried on a player's record for 24 months. Kohli having a clean disciplinary record since 2019 will be suspended if the match referee decides the contact to be intentional and gives him four demerit points.

Kohli may face suspension for the fifth Test in Sydney, which would start on January 3, hence missing the match. India would definitely be at an edge with his absence given his importance in the side. Kohli or even the Indian management can appeal this suspension if they feel the suspension is unfair. Just like expected the situation has sparked a lot of debate among fans and experts interested in seeing how the ICC and match officials are likely to handle the issue.
