Veteran Leg-Spinner Amit Mishra Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket After 25-Year Career
Veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra has officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, ending a career that lasted over 20 years. The 42-year-old played his last international match back in 2017 but continued to feature in domestic cricket and the IPL. Most recently, he represented Lucknow Super Giants in the 2024 season.
Amit Mishra finishes his journey with 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is for India, taking a total of 156 international wickets. He made an instant impact on his Test debut in 2008 at Mohali, where he picked up a five-wicket haul against Australia. That performance set the tone for a career filled with memorable spells and steady contributions for the team.
In the IPL, Mishra became one of the most trusted spinners across different franchises. With 174 wickets in 162 matches, he stands among the tournament’s all-time top wicket-takers. He also owns a special record being the only bowler with three IPL hat-tricks achieved with Delhi Daredevils in 2008, Deccan Chargers in 2011 and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013. While announcing his retirement, Mishra said injuries and the need to give youngsters a chance played a big role in his decision.
"These 25 years of my life in cricket have been nothing short of memorable. I am deeply grateful to the BCCI, the administration, Haryana cricket association, the support staff, my colleagues and to my family members who were with me all this while," Mishra said.
"I would like to thank the fans whose love and support whenever and wherever I played made the journey memorable. Cricket has given me countless memories and invaluable learnings and each moment on the ground has been a memory I'll treasure for life."
