USA Cricket Suspended by ICC but Remains Eligible for Tournaments and 2028 Olympics
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket’s membership, effective immediately. This decision comes after the USA Cricket repeаtedly broke the rules set by the ICC. However, this does not stop the U.S. team from taking part in tournаments or getting ready for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The U.S. team will still play in February’s Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, but for now, the ICC will temporarily manage the team and its administration. The ICC said the suspension was due to issues like not having a proper governance structure and not making enough progress toward becoming a recognized national governing body with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
"The suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game," the ICC said.
The ICC also said USA Cricket did some serious things that hurt cricket’s image in the U.S. and around the world. To play at the Olympics, a sport needs NGB status and cricket is coming back there after 128 years. USA Cricket had already been warned at the 2024 ICC meeting for not following the rules and was given a year to sort things out.
After July’s AGM, the ICC said USA Cricket was still on notice and that the board could take any action it thought was necessary. The U.S. has been an ICC associate member since 1965 and played in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup reaching the Super 8 stage and earning a spot in the 2026 tournament. USA Cricket CEO Johnathan Atkeison told the media, "Obviously, we are disappointed, but we are awaiting further information from them regarding the conditions for reinstatement so that we can evaluate the path forward."
