Throughout the history of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, fans have been treated to a number of surprises through many of the upsets that have occurred during the event. T20 cricket is very difficult to predict, which means that almost anything can happen in a single match. Even the strongest teams like India, Australia, and England, who are often favoured to win the tournament, have been defeated by teams from smaller countries.

Three big upsets in T20 World Cup history:

Afghanistan vs West Indies, 2016

Afghanistan won against the West Indies by six runs in 2016. Afghanistan scored 123 runs in the first Innings. Najibullah Zadran scored 48 runs. West Indies fell to score only 117 runs. Dwayne Bravo scored 28 runs. Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan took two wickets each, helping Afghanistan win.

Afghanistan vs Australia, 2024

Afghanistan shocked Australia in 2024. Afghanistan scored 148 runs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz made 60 and Ibrahim Zadran made 51. Australia were all out for 127 runs. Glenn Maxwell made 59 runs. Gulbadin Naib took four wickets and Naveen-ul-Haq took three wickets. Afghanistan won the match.

Netherlands vs England, 2009

Netherlands beat England in 2009 at Lord’s. England scored 162 runs. Luke Wright made 71. Netherlands chased the score on the last ball. Tom de Grooth made 49 runs. Even though James Anderson took three wickets, England lost.
