Tim David Joins St Lucia Kings for CPL 2025

by Staff Writer

St Lucia Kings, the defending champions of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), have bolstered their squad by signing IPL champion Tim David as their first-round pick for the 2025 season. However, the team will be without Faf du Plessis, who led them to their maiden title last year, as he prioritizes the Hundred over the CPL this season. Du Plessis will instead play for Southern Brave, whose signing is linked to his involvement with Delhi Capitals in the IPL. The Capitals' co-owners, GMR Group, are finalizing their deal to acquire Southern Brave after taking over the host county Hampshire last year.

Moeen Ali, who retired from international cricket in September last year, has opted to skip the Hundred and re-signed with Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL as a seventh-round pick. Imran Tahir, aged 46, was retained by Amazon Warriors as their first pick. Meanwhile, four-time CPL champions Trinbago Knight Riders have recruited the Pakistan duo of Mohammad Amir and Usman Tariq. Amir is a CPL veteran, having previously played for Jamaica Tallawahs and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, while Tariq, an offspinner, will make his CPL debut after playing for Quetta Gladiators in the PSL.

Antigua and Barbuda Falcons have signed Imad Wasim as their first pick and Shakib Al Hasan as their second pick. Shakib holds the record for the best bowling figures in a CPL innings, taking 4-1-6-6 for the Barbados franchise in 2013. Other notable signings include Bevon Jacobs joining Falcons, Glenn Phillips with Amazon Warriors, and Tim Seifert remaining with St Lucia Kings. Rashid Khan will once again miss the CPL, but Afghanistan's presence in the league is bolstered by spinners like AM Ghazanfar and Naveen-ul-Haq.

In an effort to promote emerging talent, CPL 2025 mandates that each franchise must play at least one player from the Breakout League, a new tournament aimed at identifying regional talent. This rule also allows franchises to field five overseas players in their XI alongside their Breakout League player. St Lucia Kings have brought back St Lucian Ackeem Auguste, who recently had a successful stint at the Chennai Super Kings academy in India. Other Breakout League players include Jyd Goolie with St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Joshua da Silva with Trinbago Knight Riders.
