Suryakumar Yadav’s Masterclass Rescues India in T20 World Cup Opener vs USA
For almost 18 months, Suryakumar Yadav was out of form in T20I cricket. From November 2024 to December 2025, his average was below 15. This was surprising for a player once called the best T20 batter in the world. Before the T20 World Cup 2026, his form was India’s biggest concern.
Suryakumar Yadav’s 84 Rescues India from 77/6 in T20 World Cup 2026 Opener
Many series came and went, but Surya’s form did not improve. The New Zealand series became his last big chance. He made good use of it. He scored three half-centuries in five matches. His strike rate also improved to 196.74. This showed that his confidence was back. Before the World Cup, this became a big positive for India. The USA felt his impact first.
In his first T20 World Cup match as captain, Surya saved India. India were in trouble at 77 for 6 in the 13th over. When Hardik Pandya got out, Surya was on 21 from 22 balls. After that, he changed the game. India scored 84 runs in the final 7.2 overs. Surya scored 63 of those runs from just 27 balls.
At his best, Surya can hit the ball all around the ground. Against the USA, he showed that again. He played sweeps, used his wrists, and played his famous ‘supla’ shot. It felt like the old Surya was back.

This was truly a captain’s innings. Surya scored 84 runs out of India’s total of 161. That was more than half the team’s runs. He did this while batting with bowlers. He also recorded the fifth-highest score by a captain in T20 World Cup history.
