Suryakumar Yadav Returns to Training After Surgery, Prepares for Asia Cup 2025 at NCA’s Centre of Excellence
Good news for the Indian cricket team, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is back in the nets after his surgery on his lower right abdomen. With the Asia Cup 2025 starting on September 9, everyone’s waiting to see if he’s fully fit in time for the tournament. Suryakumar’s putting in the effort to be ready and after weeks of rehab and a lot of talk around his recovery, he’s finally shared that he’s back training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
It’s a big step forward for Suryakumar in his recovery after surgery on his lower right abdomen. He shared a video on Instagram where you can see him putting in the hard work to get back to full fitness before the selectors make their call for the Asia Cup squad. In the video, he’s batting in the nets for the first time since his surgery. It’s definitely raised hope among fans, but the final decision about his availability will come after he gets the all-clear from his doctors in the next few weeks.
The Asia Cup 2025, played in the T20I format, is a big deal as it acts as a warm-up for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The official squad for the tournament is expected to be announced in the third week of August, and Suryakumar is working hard to secure his place. But if he doesn’t recover in time, India may need to look at other leadership options. Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill and even Sanju Samson are all possible stand-ins. Right now, though, the team management is hoping that Suryakumar will be fully fit and ready to lead the team in the subcontinental tournament.
Suryakumar Yadav Prioritizes Recovery Ahead of Asia Cup 2025
Recently, Suryakumar decided to skip the Duleep Trophy 2025 to focus fully on his recovery. Since then, he’s been concentrating on strength-building, mobility training and getting his match fitness back at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. At the same time, he's on the verge of making history in T20Is. With 2,598 runs at a strike rate of 167.07, he’s just 402 runs away from becoming the first batter to reach 3,000 T20I runs while maintaining a strike rate above 160.
Suryakumar Yadav has a chance to achieve some incredible milestones in the Asia Cup 2025. He could break the record for most T20I centuries needing just one more to equal Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell’s record of five. He’s also closing in on 150 T20I sixes with 146 already to his name and just four more to become the fifth player to hit 150 sixes in T20Is. With up to seven innings in the tournament, he could easily reach these goals if he starts strong.
