Storming Onto the Field Was a Big Mistake: MS Dhoni Reveals His Biggest IPL Regret
MS Dhoni, the legendary Indian cricketer and former captain, remembered the time in IPL 2019 when he lost his temper and went onto the field to argue with the umpires about a no-ball decision. This happened during the last over of the Rajasthan Royals vs. Chennai Super Kings match at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on April 11, 2019.
CSK needed 8 runs from three balls when Ben Stokes bowled a no-ball. The umpire first called it a no-ball, then changed his mind. This made Dhoni very upset, and he rushed onto the field to confront the umpires. Because of his surprising actions, he was fined 50% of his match fees.
Talking about that incident at a recent event, Dhoni was asked by Mandira Bedi if he had ever lost his cool. He replied “Lots of time. It has happened; one of the IPL games, it happened. I just walked on the field. So that was a big mistake."
“But other than that, also, there have been instances where something gets triggered because we play a sport where the stakes are very high; you’re supposed to win every game," Dhoni added.
Dhoni, who led CSK to five IPL title wins, will play for the Men in Yellow in the 2025 season of the league. The Chennai-based team kept him on for Rs 4 crore just before the IPL 2025 mega auction. CSK will start the season by facing their longtime rivals, the Mumbai Indians, on Sunday (March 23) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
In the coming season, Dhoni who has played more IPL matches than anyone else will have a chance to beat Suresh Raina’s record of 4687 runs and become CSK’s top run scorer. So far, Dhoni has scored 4669 runs in 234 matches for CSK, and he needs just 18 more runs to pass Raina’s tally.
