Stephen Fleming’s CSK Future Under Scanner After Another Disappointing IPL Season

Stephen Fleming’s CSK Future Under Scanner After Another Disappointing IPL SeasonStephen Fleming has been one of the defining figures of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) era, serving as the franchise’s head coach since 2008 and playing a major role in all five of their IPL title-winning campaigns. Alongside MS Dhoni, the former New Zealand captain helped build one of the most successful teams in league history. However, after a difficult run over the last three seasons, questions are now being raised about Fleming’s future with the franchise.

CSK have struggled to keep pace with the rapidly evolving nature of T20 cricket in recent years. While modern franchises embraced aggressive batting and dynamic strategies, Chennai appeared slightly behind the curve. Fleming himself admitted that the team’s approach needed change, leading CSK to revamp their outlook ahead of IPL 2026. Although the squad looked stronger this season and the Sanju Samson trade proved beneficial, injuries disrupted momentum and the campaign once again ended disappointingly.

CSK’s Decline Raises Questions Over Fleming’s Future

The numbers reflect CSK’s decline. The five-time champions finished 5th, 10th, and 8th in the last three IPL seasons while managing just 17 wins compared to 25 defeats. These underwhelming performances triggered criticism from supporters, with some fans even calling for Fleming to step down as head coach after another failed campaign.

In recent days, speculation emerged linking former India head coach Rahul Dravid with the CSK job. Dravid, who parted ways with Rajasthan Royals before the IPL 2026 season, is currently unattached to any IPL franchise, sparking rumours that he could replace Fleming. However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan dismissed the reports, clarifying that no discussions had taken place between the franchise and Dravid regarding the coaching role.

Viswanathan also confirmed that CSK have not yet made any decisions about cricket-related matters. “We have not taken a call on any cricketing matters. We will review at some stage,” he told Cricbuzz. Fleming’s responsibilities across global leagues also complicate the situation. Apart from CSK, he currently serves as head coach of the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket (MLC) and Joburg Super Kings in SA20, with the MLC 2026 season set to begin on June 18.

Meanwhile, CSK have not ruled out the possibility of MS Dhoni taking on a larger off-field role in the future. According to Viswanathan, the decision ultimately rests with Dhoni himself, who could either continue playing in IPL 2027 or transition into a mentor or coaching role. For now, CSK appear in no hurry to make major changes, but the coming months could prove crucial in shaping the franchise’s next chapter.
