South Africa Announce T20 World Cup 2026 Squad: Miller Doubtful, Rickelton & Stubbs In

South Africa have made some big changes to their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India next month. Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have been confirmed as part of the team for the tournament. Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, and Ottneil Baartman have been omitted from the squad. In an official statement by Cricket South Africa, changes were confirmed due to injuries and not concern over form and SA20.

David Miller might not be available for Paarl Royals' eliminator clash with Joburg Super Kings at Centurion as he hurt himself in the groin on Monday. Lungi Ngidi bowled only half the assigned over as Pretoria Capitals faced Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the first qualifier at Kingsmead, before he left the game with a heavily strapped leg. Dewald Brevis, who enthralled the Newlands crowd with an unbeaten 75 off 38 as Pretoria faced the Capitals in the final, suffered a finger injury. But all the above players are also a part of the Proteas' T20 World Cup squad.

It’s believed that Ngidi and Brevis will be fit for the tournament. The situation with Miller’s groin, however, raises some real concerns. The Royals have promoted two replacements for Thursday’s match, so that speaks for itself. There were also talks about Rickelton being part of the squad that will be playing against West Indies in a T20 series next week. All this being said, that’s still pending for Miller.

“Availability for the T20 World Cup remains subject to the outcome of a fitness test ahead of the support period,” CSA’s statement read.

There has been some controversy surrounding Rickelton’s previous exclusion from the South African cricket team. Even though the latter has scored back-to-back centuries for the Durban Super Giants, hitting 113 off just 63 balls and then scoring another 113 off just 60 for the Joburg outfit, the player has been excluded in favour of De Zorzi, who has been nursing a hamstring injury for the last December 3. Stubb’s exclusion has evoked huge controversy too owing to the former’s performance for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. Proteas will make their opening match against Canada in the T20 World Cup on February 9 at Ahmedabad.
