Sourav Ganguly Back as Cricket Association of Bengal President Full Details

by Dwijesh

Sourav Ganguly has been elected as the new president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), marking his return to cricket administration after serving as BCCI chief from 2019 to 2022.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support. At CAB, there is no opposition, everyone is a part of this Association. We will all work together to take CAB & Bengal cricket ahead. There are important events coming up- Eden Gardens India’s Test match against South Africa, T20 World Cup, Bengal Pro T20 League. I will try and do my best," Ganguly said.

The former India captain had filed his nomination earlier on Sunday and was elected unopposed. He will now take over from his elder brother, Snehasish. This role won’t be new for him. Ganguly had already served as CAB president between 2015 and 2019 before moving on to lead the BCCI.

As the new president, Ganguly will represent the Cricket Association of Bengal at the BCCI annual general meeting in Mumbai on September 28. Reports suggest that the CAB Apex Council unanimously nominated him for this role.

According to Revsportz, the state body is set for a major reshuffle, with the terms of the president, vice-president Amalendu Biswas, secretary Naresh Ojha, treasurer Prabir Chakraborty, and joint secretary Debabrata Das ending soon. Notably, Das was earlier suspended by the Apex Council over charges of financial misconduct.

Sourav Ganguly’s Role in SA20

Just last month, Ganguly took up the role of head coach for SA20 franchise Pretoria Capitals, replacing Jonathan Trott. The team has had a mixed run in the league so far finishing first in the group stage of the inaugural season but losing the final to Sunrisers Eastern Cape. In the next two seasons (2023-24 and 2024-25), they slipped to fifth place both times, missing the playoffs.

Ganguly made headlines even before the fourth season began, thanks to his smart moves at the players’ auction. He played a key role in signing Keshav Maharaj and youngster Dewald Brevis. Brevis became the most expensive player in SA20 history, securing a contract worth R1,700,000.
