Shubman Gill Likely to Replace Rohit Sharma as India’s New ODI Captain: Reports
Shubman Gill is likely to become India’s new ODI captain for the upcoming series against Australia. The young Punjab batter, who is already leading the Test team, had earlier worked as Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the Champions Trophy this year. Now, reports say he will take over the role from Rohit, showing that the selectors may be looking at him as India’s future captain across all formats.
According to a report by The Indian Express, Shubman Gill is likely to be named the new ODI captain even though Rohit Sharma will still be part of the squad for the series against Australia. The selectors have told Gill, who is already the Test captain, that they want him to lead India in the 2027 ODI World Cup, so they decided to hand him the role now. The report also mentioned that Gill joined the selection committee meeting online on Saturday while he was busy playing in the first Test against West Indies.
The report also mentions that the selectors informed head coach Gautam Gambhir about their decision to make Shubman Gill the ODI captain. Gill, who was recently named vice-captain to Suryakumar Yadav for the Asia Cup 2025 is now set for a bigger role. At the same time, senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still part of India’s plans. Both last played an international match in the Champions Trophy 2025 final earlier this year.
Rohit and Kohli Working on Fitness Ahead of Tour
On Friday, reports said the selectors wanted to talk to Rohit Sharma about the ODI captaincy before picking the squad for the India vs Australia series. The team for the three ODIs will likely be announced after the first Test against West Indies ends on Saturday. There were doubts about Rohit and Virat Kohli playing in Australia, but both have been working on their fitness.
Rohit has been training indoors in Mumbai with Abhishek Nayar, while Kohli has been practicing in London. After winning the Champions Trophy, Rohit also said he has no plans to retire from ODIs and gave a strong reply to his critics while celebrating with Kohli in Dubai.
"There’s no future plan, things will keep on going as they are. I'm not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure that no rumours are spread moving forward," said Rohit.
Rishabh Pant Likely to Miss Australia Tour
Things took a big turn after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket, even though they had returned to domestic cricket to push for a place in the England tour squad. Their decision to retire midway through the IPL only fueled more talk about their international future. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant is expected to miss the Australia tour as he continues to recover from the leg injury he picked up during the England series.
