Sharmin Akhter and Jahanara Alam Rejoin Bangladesh ODI Squad for Ireland Series

In a significant boost to the Bangladesh women's cricket team, experienced players Sharmin Akhter and Jahanara Alam have been recalled to the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Ireland. This series marks Bangladesh's first ODI encounter since facing Australia in April 2023, and the team is set to showcase its talent on home soil with matches scheduled in Dhaka on November 27 and 30, and December 2, followed by T20Is in Sylhet on December 5, 7, and 9.
Sharmin Akhter, a seasoned opener, returns to the fold after having missed the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Her last international appearance was during the ODI series against India in July 2023. Since making her debut in 2011, the 28-year-old has accumulated 35 ODIs and 16 T20Is under her belt, bringing valuable experience to the team’s top order.
Jahanara Alam, a stalwart in Bangladesh's bowling attack, also rejoins the team. As one of the three players who have surpassed the 50 ODIs milestone for Bangladesh, Jahanara's presence is crucial. With 48 wickets in 52 matches at an average of 30.39, her experience will be pivotal in leading the bowling unit against Ireland.
The selectors have made some changes to the squad since their last outing, excluding players like Farzana Akter, Sumaiya Akter, Disha Biswas, and Nishita Akter. This selection reflects a strategic approach to balance experience with fresh talent as Bangladesh eyes a series victory over Ireland, a team they last defeated in a bilateral ODI series back in 2016.
In addition to the seasoned campaigners, the squad includes emerging talents such as middle-order batter Taj, who made her international debut during the Women's T20 World Cup in October, and left-arm spinner Sanjida, who has featured in 18 WT20Is. Their inclusion highlights the team’s focus on nurturing young talent alongside seasoned players.
Bangladesh has historically performed well against Ireland, winning three out of the six ODIs played between the two sides. With the advantage of playing at home, the team aims to leverage this familiarity to secure another series victory.
This series not only provides an opportunity for Bangladesh to refine their strategies and combinations but also serves as an essential platform for players like Sharmin and Jahanara to reaffirm their pivotal roles in the national setup. As the cricketing world watches, Bangladesh is poised to make a strong statement in the international arena.
