Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant’s Future in Champions Trophy 2025 Squad to Be Confirmed Soon

by William Campbell

The Indian selectors and the team management are to meet on Monday, 6th of January, 2025 to discuss and complete the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. BCCI has already looked forward to one of the biggest tournaments after the series against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 was drawn.

Even though he has not performed well in the batting department recently, Rohit Sharma will continue to captain the Indian team in the Champions Trophy. The dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is also likely to keep his spot in the squad for this high-profile competition, according to RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan. This meeting is therefore very important as it will help in determining India’s strategy during this ICC tournament.

There are expected to be discussions on Arshdeep Singh’s availability for India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad in the upcoming selection meeting with decisions to be made in the near future. Some preliminary meetings have already taken place to decide on the core squad. As reported earlier, there were speculations that Hardik Pandya could possibly lead the team in the absence of Rohit Sharma but it has been officially stated that Rohit will be leading India in the tournament. However, there is a question mark on whether Suryakumar Yadav will be able to find a place in the squad as he has not been consistent in his ODI performances which makes the final selection all the more important.

Bumrah’s Availability in Doubt for Champions Trophy

Jasprit Bumrah's suffering in his back has cast doubt on India’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. BCCI has not made any official statement in this regard but the meeting to be held soon will decide whether the star pacer will be included in the squad or not. In view of Bumrah’s past, especially after he underwent surgery for a stress fracture in his back in 2023, it would be prudent for the team to take its time with his recovery. This is because Bumrah’s absence if it is a serious one, can be detrimental to India’s prospects in the tournament.

Challenges also include Shami’s fitness issue, which may affect his participation while Siraj is also struggling with his fitness issues as well. Such problems put India’s pace battery in a precarious position. The team, which is looking to bring home the Champions Trophy trophy after the 2013 victory with MS Dhoni as captain, the selectors face a tough task in finalizing a reliable bowling attack to challenge for the eight-nation tournament.

The next test for India is a five match T20 International series which will begin on 22nd January and will be followed by a three match ODI series against England. The Champions Trophy will be held between 19th February to 9th March in Pakistan and UAE and the team’s squad should be named on or before 12th of January.
