Rohit Sharma Provides Update on Rishabh Pant's Injury Ahead of Second Test Against New Zealand

by Staff Writer

India's captain Rohit Sharma addressed concerns regarding Rishabh Pant's fitness following the team's loss to New Zealand in the first Test in Bengaluru on October 20, 2024. Pant, who had previously undergone knee surgery after a car accident, suffered a setback when he took a hit to his right knee during the match.

Despite the injury, Pant contributed significantly in India's second innings, scoring 99 runs alongside Sarfaraz Khan, who made 150, helping the team post a total of 462 runs. However, Pant did not take to the field as wicketkeeper in the second innings, raising questions about his availability for the upcoming second Test in Pune, set to begin on October 24.

In a post-match press conference, Rohit Sharma reassured fans about Pant's condition. He clarified that Pant's absence from wicketkeeping duties was purely a precautionary measure. Rohit noted that Pant had undergone a significant operation on his knee and it was essential to prioritize his long-term fitness, especially after observing him struggle with running during his innings.

“It’s just to be a little careful about where he is at and what he means to us,” Rohit explained. “Even while batting, he was not running comfortably. He was focused on hitting boundaries. With a player of his caliber, we need to be cautious to ensure he can contribute fully in future matches.”

As India looks forward to the second Test, the management will continue to monitor Pant's recovery closely, ensuring he is fit to play without risking further injury.
