"Ricky Ponting Predicts Limited Playtime for MS Dhoni in IPL 2025"

Chennai Super Kings have retained MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for IPL 2025, but former Australia captain Ricky Ponting suggests that Dhoni may not participate in every match. Ponting, who is now the head coach of Punjab Kings, indicated that Dhoni might play a mentoring role this season.
"He had a tough season two years ago but made a strong comeback last year. Dhoni will likely aim to fulfill a similar role again. However, don’t expect him to play in every game; the franchise could rest him for a match or two," Ponting shared with ICC.
Ponting also pointed out Dhoni's ongoing injury concerns over the past few seasons, emphasizing his value as a mentor and leader, whether on the field or from the sidelines. "His leadership is crucial for Chennai, both on and off the field," he added.
Additionally, Ponting expressed surprise at the release of prominent players like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer by their franchises, noting a disconnect between the players and their teams. "It’s shocking to see players of their caliber available for the auction," he remarked.
Pant has been with Delhi Capitals since his IPL debut in 2016, while Iyer previously led Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title but was let go. Rahul's relationship with Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka soured during IPL 2024, leading to his release.
