Punjab announce Vijay Hazare Trophy squad without a captain; Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma included
The Punjab cricket team has announced their 18-man squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is scheduled to take place starting December 24 onwards. The list includes players such as the Indian cricket team best players, including Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and Arshdeep Singh. What’s more, the selecting committee for the state has not yet announced their captain.
Players like the Indian ODI skipper Gill were also included in the list for Punjab team. He was just excluded from the T20 World Cup 2026. Even though the Punjab batsman has done well in ODIs for the year 2025 so far, scoring 490 runs from 11 matches at an average of 49, his performance has not been that great in T20 Internationals.

Even after being back in the T20 Internationals after the Asia Cup match and after poor performance there and the series that followed between Australia and South Africa, he was excluded from the T20 World Cup 2026.
Shubam Gill was back playing in the IND-SA T20I series after he struggled with a neck injury in the 1st Test at Kolkata. For this reason, he was compelled to absent himself from the ODI series that followed. For the three T20Is that he participated in, he could score a total of 4, 0, and 28 runs, respectively. With this, he was ruled out of playing in the 4th T20I because of a foot injury, with Sanju Samson substituting him in the 5th T20I in a game that is part of VHT 2025/25, from which he will lead India in playing against NZ in their ODI series set to begin from January 11.
