PSL 11 retentions: Quetta keep Abrar, Usman Tariq as Wasim Jr and Saud Shakeel enter auction

by mishaalmubarak

Quetta Gladiators will be without Mohammad Amir and Faheem Ashraf after opting to retain mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed in the Platinum category. Abrar was the previous edition’s joint second-highest wicket-taker, claiming 17 wickets in 12 games. A year earlier, he finished third on the wicket-takers’ list with 16 scalps in 10 matches.

Captain released, Usman, Nawaz stay

Tough choices were required in the Diamond category as well, with Quetta forced to pick one of Usman Tariq, Mohammad Wasim Jr., and Saud Shakeel. The Gladiators retained Usman, opting for spinners for two of their four retentions. Quetta also released Saud, their captain last season, who led them to their first final since 2017.

Hasan Nawaz ended the previous season as one of the franchise’s most impactful players. He scored 399 runs, including an unbeaten hundred and three fifties, at a strike rate of 162. For his performances in PSL X, he was retained in the Gold category. However, Quetta released Khurram Shahzad, Haseebullah Khan, Khawaja Mohammad Nafay, and Danish Aziz.

Will Shamyl Hussain finally get a PSL game?

Quetta did not retain any player in the Silver category, instead opting for Shamyl Hussain as their Emerging pick. Shamyl had earlier represented Islamabad United, though he did not get a game with them.

However, this time, his purple patch in the President's Cup Grade-I List A competition was too good to ignore him. Shamyl was the third-highest run-scorer of the tournament, scoring at an average of 52.5.
