Pretoria Capitals Appoint Sourav Ganguly as Head Coach After Trott Steps DownFormer India captain Sourav Ganguly will take over as the head coach of Pretoria Capitals for the next SA20 season, replacing Jonathan Trott. Trott, who joined the team before the 2025 season, had a tough time as coach, with the Capitals winning just 2 out of 10 matches and missing out on the playoffs.

Pretoria Capitals announced Trott's exit on social media saying, "Jonathan Trott, forever grateful for your leadership and dedication to the team 🙌 All the best on your next adventure! Once a Capital, always a Capital!"

Meanwhile, Trott will continue as Afghanistan's coach until the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February–March 2026. Sourav Ganguly, on the other hand, will begin his role as Pretoria Capitals’ coach from December 26 with the SA20 season running until January 25.

Pretoria Capitals have had ups and downs in the SA20 league. They topped the group stage in the first season but lost the final to Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Since then, the team finished fifth in both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, missing the playoffs. With Sourav Ganguly now as head coach, they hope to turn things around. This will be Ganguly’s first role as a head coach, though he has plenty of experience in cricket administration, having been president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (2015–2019), a mentor for Delhi Capitals in 2019, and later president of the BCCI.

Ganguly’s recent role as JSW’s director of cricket has also helped him get ready for coaching a franchise team. JSW co-owns the Delhi Capitals in both the IPL and WPL. His first task will be the player auction on September 9, where the Capitals aim to build a stronger team under his guidance.

This will be Ganguly’s first time as a head coach, though he has worked with several franchises as a director or mentor. He was team director for Delhi Capitals from 2018–19 and again from 2022–24. He is now the director of cricket at JSW Sports, overseeing the Delhi Capitals women’s team in the WPL.
