PCB likely to remove Shan Masood as Pakistan Test captain

by mishaalmubarak

Pakistan Cricket Board has reportedly made a decision to remove Shan Masood as the national Test captain following Pakistan’s consecutive 2-0 defeats against Bangladesh, both home and away. Masood was appointed in November 2023 after Babar Azam stepped down from all-format captaincy.

Since taking over, Pakistan have won only four out of 16 Tests. That record places him among the least successful Test captains in Pakistan’s history in terms of win-loss ratio.

He also holds the joint fourth-worst record among Test captains who have led their sides in more than five matches.

Away form adds pressure on leadership

Pakistan have now recorded their longest streak of away Test defeats, losing all seven away matches since July 2023. Shan Masood has not managed a single away Test win during his tenure, which has intensified scrutiny on his leadership.

PCB expected to discuss replacement options

The board is expected to hold further discussions before making a final announcement. Pakistan’s next Test assignment is against the West Indies cricket team in July, and a new captain could be named before that series.

Shan Masood is understood to have left the decision to the board while acknowledging that structural changes may be needed.

“My intentions are clean. I took on this job to improve our Test cricket. There are things that need to be discussed with the board and the decision is always the board's. But my intentions have always been on how to improve this side because I feel you should always take on challenges and accept opportunities.”
