Pakistan continue winless streak in the Women’s T20 World Cup after Australia triumph

by mishaalmubarak

Pakistan could not get off the mark, neither in the Women’s T20 World Cup nor against Australia in their head-to-head record. They had a desperately one-sided game against the table-toppers and expectedly slumped to a disappointing total while chasing a high score.

Australia unbothered by early wicket fall

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, Australia were in trouble early as Sadia Iqbal dismissed Beth Mooney on the very first ball of the innings. But that setback did not mean much for Australia as they recovered quickly.

Ellyse Perry, along with Georgia Voll, cranked up the scoring rate to almost 10 an over. This, and Perry’s brilliance, kept Australia from losing momentum even after they lost three of their batters within a matter of a few balls, two of which came in Nashra Sandhu’s over.

Perry and Annabel Sutherland then took the scoring upon themselves. Fatima Sana soon got rid of Perry, whom she has called her ideal player. But the damage had been done, and more of that came as Nicole Carey and Alana King struck a 21-run knock off 10 balls to take Australia to a 200-run total.

Pakistan’s short-lived chase

Whatever chances Pakistan had of posing a challenge to Australia, they disappeared with the gigantic total. This was further aggravated as Pakistan lost three wickets inside the powerplay, two of which were needless run-outs that owed more to Pakistan's poor running than any Australian brilliance.

In total, three Pakistan batters were run out. On top of that, Fatima Sana couldn’t produce the brilliance she was being banked on to do. Her 12-ball 17 did help, but it was nothing in front of the target they were pursuing. Pakistan eventually lost the game by 113 runs.
