Pakistan Backs Bangladesh in ICC-BCCI Standoff Over T20 World Cup 2026

The concern of Bangladesh's place in the T20 World Cup 2026 is still pending. First, Bangladesh contacted the ICC about it, and then they called for changing group places with Ireland. After ICC rejected that proposal, Bangladesh are given a deadline until January 21 after which they would replace Bangladesh with Scotland in the tournament.
Now, Pakistan, yet another opponent of India, have entered the mix. They are now hinting that they may boycott the tournament if the ICC calls upon Bangladesh to hold their fixtures in India. The Bangla nation has been stating since January 4 that they won't be coming to India for the Group fixtures.
T20 World Cup 2026 in Trouble as Bangladesh and Pakistan Raise Concerns
The ICC has been holding strong so far and has made it clear that nothing can alter their original plan and a final decision must be made by January 21st at least. Now, with Pakistan throwing its hat into the mix, interest is sure to pick up here. Pakistan’s allegiance to Bangladesh has come as a surprise following a clear request for support from Dhaka officials.
“Bangladesh’s reasons for not going to India are valid, and no one can force them. Pakistan fully supports Bangladesh and will reconsider its participation if the issue remains unresolved,” a source told Telecom Asia Sport.
Another source added that Islamabad had conveyed to the ICC that “Pakistan has emphasised that no country should face pressure or threats regarding hosting responsibilities and has assured its neighbours of full support on the matter,” as reported by Geo News.
The reasons for this conflict can be traced back to the removal of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL 2026 side of Kolkata Knight Riders on the instructions of the BCCI, which led to a ban on the broadcast of IPL matches in Bangladesh. As the matches are supposed to start on the 7th of February itself, the ICC has very less time for a compromise on the issue.
