ODI World Cup 2027: Can West Indies Secure Direct Qualification?

[ Poll: lyagA2Zp ]

The 2027 ODI World Cup is now less than two years away, and excitement is already building among teams and fans around the world. The 14th edition of the tournament will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, featuring 14 teams competing for cricket’s biggest prize. While the schedule for the tournament is yet to be announced, it is expected to be played in October and November.

The tournament will return to the 2003 format with 14 teams placed in two groups of seven each. The top three will make it to the Super Six stage, with the top four making it to the semifinals.

A total of 14 teams will play in the tournament. South Africa and Zimbabwe will get direct entry as hosts. Namibia, the other co-host, will still need to play in the qualifying rounds since they are not a full-member team. The top eight teams in the ICC ODI team rankings as of March 31, 2027 (excluding the hosts) will directly qualify for the tournament.

This means if South Africa stay in the top eight, the ninth-ranked side as on the cut-off date will get a direct entry. If Zimbabwe also stay in the top eight, the side ranked 10th will also go through. Notably, the remaining four teams will come from a 10-team qualifier tournament.

Are the West Indies still in contention for direct qualification?

West Indies, who have won the ODI World Cup twice, missed out on playing in the 2023 edition after failing to qualify. Now, they are working hard to earn a direct spot in the next World Cup. At the moment, the West Indies are placed ninth in the ODI rankings, while South Africa sit at sixth. Since the top eight teams get direct entry, the ninth-placed team is currently at the cut-off line.

If the Windies can hold on to that spot, they will qualify without needing to play in the qualifiers. Recently, the West Indies lost a three-match ODI series to Bangladesh 1-2. Bangladesh are just behind them in 10th place. The Windies will next play a one-day series against New Zealand in November.
