The BCCI has made it clear that Gautam Gambhir will not be removed as India’s head coach, even after the 2-0 whitewash against South Africa. Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid in 2024, has now faced three Test series defeats and two home whitewashes in just one year.

After the heavy 408-run loss in the second Test, Gambhir said that his future was up to the board. However, the BCCI has now said that they have a plan in place and will continue with him for the time being.

According to a report in The Indian Express, a BCCI official said that the board won’t make any quick decisions because the team is going through a transition. The official also made it clear that removing Gambhir isn’t even being considered, as he has a contract until 2027 and the T20 World Cup is coming up soon.

BCCI: Gambhir to Continue as Head Coach Despite Test Defeats

The board will talk to the selectors and team management in the coming days, but they won’t take any sudden or emotional decisions.

“The BCCI will not rush in taking any decision, the team is in a transition phase. As far as coach Gautam Gambhir is concerned, we will not take any decision on him as the World Cup is around the corner and his contract is till the 2027 World Cup. The BCCI will speak to selectors and team management going ahead but there won’t be any knee jerk action,” a BCCI official said.

So far, Gambhir’s record as Test coach includes a 2-0 win over Bangladesh, a 3-0 defeat to New Zealand, a 3-1 loss to Australia, a 2-2 draw with England, a 2-0 win against the West Indies, and most recently, a 2-0 loss to South Africa.

“It is for the BCCI to decide. This is something that I said in my first-ever press conference when I became the head coach as well. Indian cricket is important; I am not important. I am the same guy who got results in England and won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. This is a team which is learning,” said Gambhir.
