Multan Sultans Owner Ali Khan Tareen Threatens Legal Action Against PSL and PCB
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) might face legal trouble as the owner of the Multan Sultans, Ali Khan Tareen has threatened to sue the league and the Pakistan Cricket Board. He said on social media that if the current issues continue, they will have no choice but to go to court, even though he doesn’t want to. Tareen added that the whole situation could have been solved easily with a simple talk, but pride is making things complicated and he hopes common sense will win, though it doesn’t look likely.
Tareen has often been in the spotlight for openly criticizing the PCB, including once tearing up a notice that asked him to apologize publicly. He regularly speaks out against what he calls the PSL and PCB’s “unprofessional” way of running the league. His latest anger comes from the PCB’s apparent refusal to renew his Multan Sultans franchise, while contracts for the other five teams are reportedly being renewed. Since the PCB isn’t talking to him, Tareen decided to give an update himself.
Multan Sultans Claim Lack of Response from PSL Management
"Over the past month we have sent multiple emails to the PSL management, asking for our valuation and renewal letter (which every other team has already received). But there has been no response. No response to our legal letter, no response to our emails, no response to my letter to the Chairman.
Even other franchise reps have asked why Multan is not being included in the valuation and renewal process. No response, (sic). For those asking why this is not being handled behind closed doors, it is simply because the PSL Management refuse to engage with us," Tareen wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In a recent statement, the PCB said that the renewal of existing PSL franchises has been completed. They announced that the independent valuation process for all franchises and other commercial assets is finished. Following this, renewal offer letters with the updated franchise fees for the next 10 years have been formally sent to all compliant PSL teams, asking them to respond within the given timeline.
PSL Expansion Plans: Possible New Franchises in Four Cities
The PCB is reportedly considering ending the Multan Sultans’ contract with Tareen over a breach of the PSL code of conduct. Currently, the PSL has teams in Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore, Quetta, Karachi, and Multan. The league is also thinking of expanding to eight teams, with Hyderabad, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi among the cities being considered for new franchises.
