MS Dhoni Shares Frustrating Incident with Deepak Chahar During IPL 2019

by Alxe

Former Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni recently reflected on a frustrating moment involving Deepak Chahar during the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni recounted how Chahar frequently expressed his desire to bowl in the death overs, despite his struggles when given the chance.

The incident occurred during a match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS). Dhoni revealed that the pacer was given the opportunity to bowl at a crucial time, with PBKS needing 39 runs off just 12 balls. However, Chahar's performance fell short as he delivered two consecutive no-balls, leaving Dhoni visibly annoyed.

“Deepak is a talented bowler, but he has this tendency to approach me about his role in the death overs. I questioned why he wanted to bowl in that phase when he was successfully taking wickets in the powerplay,” Dhoni stated during an event hosted by RIGI.

Dhoni emphasized that Chahar had been effective with the new ball and suggested he focus on excelling in that area instead. He also cautioned Chahar against using variations like the knuckleball, citing concerns over his sweating, but Chahar was determined to try them anyway.

“I told him I didn’t want to see different deliveries at that moment. I wanted him to stick to what he knew best,” Dhoni added, highlighting his frustration over the situation.

This incident not only showcases Dhoni's leadership style but also underscores the challenges faced by players in high-pressure situations during the IPL.
