Maharaj Optimistic About South Africa's Prospects in Test Against Bangladesh

South African spinner Keshav Maharaj is optimistic about his team's chances of taking the lead in the first Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Despite a spirited fightback from the hosts on the third day, South Africa remains in a strong position, albeit with a narrow margin.

Bangladesh's Mehidy Hasan and Jaker Ali forged a crucial 138-run partnership for the seventh wicket, helping the team overcome their first-innings deficit. As the day ended, Bangladesh reached 283 for 7, giving them an 81-run lead. Mehidy, who remained unbeaten on 87, and Jaker, who contributed 58, stepped up just when Bangladesh was on the brink of an innings defeat.

Forecasts indicate that rain could disrupt play over the next two days, attributed to a depression in the Bay of Bengal. However, Maharaj remains unfazed by the weather uncertainties and the resilience shown by the Bangladesh side.

"Bangladesh performed well today. The conditions improved slightly with a somewhat used ball. However, we still have the upper hand. They have a lead, but we have three wickets left to take," Maharaj stated at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday.

He emphasized the need for South Africa to restrict Bangladesh as much as possible to seize control of the match.
